Liminal
Project type
Interactive web game | Conceptual digital art | Residency project
Date
2021
Location
Arebyte Gallery, London
Created during the Realities residency with Artbyte Gallery (2021), Liminal is a surreal browser-based game that explores the illusion of control. Inspired by the tactile satisfaction of popping bubble wrap and the compulsive feedback loops of casual gaming, the piece layers playful interaction with deeper existential questions.
At the time of making, I was between cities — leaving London, arriving in Edinburgh. That threshold became the conceptual space for Liminal: a moment of flux, of not-knowing, of asking what lies ahead.
Liminal is change, transition, a state of suspension. What do we control? What can we change? Or is it all predetermined?
Built in P5.js, the game offers a sense of agency, but the outcome never truly shifts. The rules are never quite what they seem — a quiet provocation to reflect on choice, fate, and the unknown.
