Space and Time is a generative artwork that combines AI-generated imagery with hand-written code in OpenFrameworks. The project began with carefully crafted prompts to imagine landscapes and planetary forms. These images were then transformed through custom code that interprets frequencies and beat onset, shaping the movement of 3D forms in ways that never fully repeat.
The work sits in an in-between space: is it AI art, or not? The images may be AI-generated, but the system itself — the code, the movement, the sound — comes from elsewhere. The question of authorship and tool-making runs through the piece, reflecting both my background as a coder and my ongoing research into AI’s role in creative practice.
Early versions of the code were messy and barely held together; this iteration has been reworked and optimised, a process of refining structure and making sense of what once felt chaotic. What emerges is an evolving world of shifting colour and form, a system that is both technical and poetic.
The generative system never repeats. Individual frames can be captured through the graphics card’s FBO (frame buffer object), producing high-resolution fine art giclée prints on Hahnemühle German Etching paper. Each print becomes a unique fragment of a wider system — a still taken from a world in motion.
Space and Time also raises questions about AI’s ecological and ethical impact, and what happens to originality and deep thought in an age where the machine is always at hand. By now the technology is here to stay, regardless of personal feelings — and this work is as much about living with that reality as it is about planetary imagery or code.
